AWS Managed Microsoft Active Directory
A managed Microsoft Active Directory service in the AWS Cloud using AWS Directory Service, with AWS-managed domain controllers, Multi-AZ deployment, and CloudFormation-based provisioning.
Overview
The AWS Managed Microsoft AD provides a managed Microsoft Active Directory service in the AWS Cloud. AWS Directory Service deploys two managed domain controllers across subnets in separate Availability Zones and manages underlying infrastructure tasks including monitoring, recovery, replication, snapshots, and operating-system patching.
Syed Solutions can assist with directory planning, Amazon VPC and DNS prerequisites, security groups, directory creation, administrative access, trust planning, Amazon EC2 domain joins, application integration, monitoring, documentation, and connectivity with existing directory environments.
AWS Managed Microsoft AD is not the same as customer-managed Windows Server domain controllers on Amazon EC2. Customers do not receive operating-system or domain-controller administrator access to the underlying AWS-managed instances.
What You Will Receive
Key Features
- AWS Directory Service for Microsoft Active Directory — a fully managed Microsoft AD service deployed and operated by AWS
- Two managed domain controllers in separate Availability Zones — Multi-AZ redundancy managed by AWS for availability
- No operating-system or domain-controller patching required — AWS manages infrastructure maintenance, backups, and recovery
- Standard or Enterprise edition selection — choose the edition based on user count, trust requirements, and feature needs
- Optional trust relationships — supports forest trusts with compatible self-managed Active Directory environments when DNS and network connectivity are established
- Amazon EC2 domain-join integration — Windows and Linux EC2 instances can join the managed domain for centralized authentication
- Integrated DNS service — Active Directory–integrated DNS zones managed within the directory
- VPC DHCP options and DNS planning — configuring VPC settings to resolve the managed AD domain name
- Security group and network connectivity configuration — controlling access to directory endpoints
- CloudFormation-based repeatable provisioning — consistent directory infrastructure deployment across environments
Deployment Overview
We discuss your directory requirements — edition selection, domain name, VPC prerequisites, DNS strategy, trust requirements, and integration with existing Active Directory environments.
We deploy the AWS Managed Microsoft AD directory, configure VPC settings, DHCP options, security groups, and verify the directory is operational across both Availability Zones.
We configure administrative access, set up EC2 domain joins, plan trust relationships if required, and validate authentication and Group Policy functionality.
We deliver deployment documentation including directory details, DNS configuration, security group rules, trust configuration, domain-join procedures, and operational notes for your team.
